How To Take Care Of Your Jewellery?

How To Take Care Of Your Jewellery?

Whenever we buy something, it’s always new and fresh. But, over time, it starts becoming duller and older. This is why it is always necessary to take complete care of your possessions after you buy them. Taking complete care will preserve your possessions for longer. And, when you are investing in something precious like gold, diamonds, and silver, you must make sure you are taking care of them in the right way. Every metal and stone requires a different care procedure. What you do for gold, you cannot do for silver; what you do for pearls, you cannot do for diamonds. So, here’s a blog to help you know how you can take care of all kinds of jewellery – expensive metal, expensive stones, and cheaper fashion jewellery.

Gold jewellery

Gold jewellery does not tarnish or degrade over time like silver does, which is why it is the most expensive jewellery material. However, it does lose its shine with usage. This is why you must store all your gold pieces wrapped in soft clothes, each individual piece stored separately, to prevent them from getting tangled and scratched, thus losing its shine. Also, you must keep your gold jewellery away from any kinds of chemicals. This is why it is always advised to get completely ready with all your powders, creams, makeups, gels, sprays, and perfumes first; and then put on your gold jewellery just as you are ready to walk out from the door. This is because if you use any such chemicals and sprays after wearing your gold, the chemicals may touch the metal and discolour them slowly.

Silver jewellery

Silver jewellery is never 100% pure silver, because pure silver is too soft to be moulded and held in shape. This is why silver jewellery is always 90-95% silver combined with some percentage of any other metal like copper to make it strong. Thus, with silver jewellery containing metals other than only silver, they are likely to react with the environment and tarnish. This is why we see silver jewellery turning grey or black after each use. You are thus advised to always keep your silver jewellery away from moisture and other atmospheric environment. So, whenever your silver is not in use, make sure to store them in an air-tight box, after covering each piece completely with cotton. This avoids contact of air and moisture with the silver; thus keeping your silver shining for longer.

Diamond jewellery

Diamonds, although being a hard material, can be easily scratched and chipped. Thus, if you have multiple diamond pieces to store, you must keep them stored away from one another in a compartmentalized storage space, avoiding direct contact space between them. Also, avoid wearing your diamond rings and bracelets when doing heavy manual work or washing chores.

Pearl jewellery

Pearl jewellery is completely different from other jewellery types. Unlike other jewellery pieces, which we always advise you to wear only when necessary, and to keep them stored away in an air-tight box free from moisture, we cannot say the same for pearls. Instead, we will say that you should wear your pearls quite often, because pearls benefit immensely from absorbing the natural oils from your skin! Also, you should never store pearls in an air-tight package. Instead, you must keep them stored with a damp cloth nearby because lack of moisture can crack the pearls! However, you definitely need to keep your pearls away from chemicals like chlorine, bleach, vinegar, perfume, cosmetics, and sprays. And, when storing pearls, keep them away from other objects and jewellery that may scratch their surfaces.

Fashion jewellery

Fashion jewellery is one of the most commonly worn accessories today. Whatever material used in your fashion jewellery, it is always safe to keep the pieces away from water and chemicals as much as possible. As these jewellery pieces are worn on a day-to-day basis, you must be very careful while wearing them throughout the day. Take off your watches, rings, and bangles while doing household chores like washing and cleaning. Take off your earrings and chains while taking a bath.
